Tees Valley Mohawks’ record rolls on after comeback
Dec 19 2007 by Peter Clarke, Evening Gazette
TEES Valley Mohawks retained their unbeaten record in the league with a hard fought away victory over Plymouth Marjon Cannons by the closest of margins 97-95.
What was so incredible about this win was that Mohawks only won one of the four quarters.
The Teessiders were down and out at half time with a large deficit 27-48. But in an unbelievable turn-around Mohawks fought back with an incredible run to end the third quarter 69-64 up.
Once again American Pierre Sully waded in with a magnificent 32 points, aided and abetted by Mohawks’ home grown talent David Hanson joint top scoring with 32.
The league now has a festive break until January 5 when Mohawks host Northampton Neptunes.
The Mohawks’ stars of the future also have a lot to cheer, as they are going into the Christmas break with five wins out of five in the league in the Under 18s North East Conference.
But more importantly, the young men have joined the elite eight in the country by qualifying for the quarter finals of the SureShot National Cup.
The Tees Valley side have so far beaten Wear Valley 105-85, Durham Wildcats 96-59, Newcastle Eagles 79-70 and Bury Blue Devils 88-79.
The Under 18s now play Manchester Magic in the last eight.
This quarter final game will be held at home at the Mohawks Basketball Development Centre at Ormesby Sports Complex.
