NEWI Nets 76 v 97 Tees Valley Mohawks . . .

Mohawks’ strength has Nets in a tangle

Nov 7 2007 Evening Gazette

TEES Valley Mohawks began their bid to return to English basketball’s top flight with a convincing away win over NEWI Nets 97-76.

Mohawks have already beaten the Wrexham-based side 94-78 in the Patrons Cup this season and their rematch game followed the same pattern with the home side edging the first quarter 21-20.

With very little to separate both sides, Mohawks’ defence came into its own, limiting the Nets’ outstanding Greek Kostas Prassis to only 14 points in the game.

The Teessiders piled on the points, winning each of the next three quarters 29-21, 16-15 and, finally, out-scoring their hosts three-to-two to win 30-20 in the final session.

Leading the line for the Mohawks was captain Ike Attah with a top-scoring 25 points, followed by the league’s most outstanding young talent David Hanson with 20 points and Mohawks’ American Pierre Sully chipped in again with a hard-earned 19 points.

Mohawks do not play this weekend but they are back on their travels the following weekend with the long road trip to play at Kent Crusaders.
