Hoop Dreams . . .
Tees Valley Mohawks, in partnership with other bodies such as Cleveland Police and Middlesbrough Council Regeneration Dept, developed an innovative community project called Hoop Dreams.
This nationally recognised Positive Futures project uses basketball players and coaches from the Tees Valley Mohawks to work within schools and youth clubs, as positive role models and mentors in deprived areas of Tees Valley.
Hoop Dreams was officially launched on July 4th 1997. Four youngsters from Grangetown and South Bank were rewarded with the opportunity of a trip to an American basketball camp for their social improvements and dedication to the project.
Members of the Hoop Dreams team met the Prime Minster, Tony Blair who endorsed and congratulated their work.
Hoop Dreams re-launched the expansion of the project across the whole of
Tees Valley at a high profile event at Cleveland Police Head Quarters.
The Hoop Dreams project is a leading example for the Positive Futures strategy, which was launched in 2000 by the former MP for Redcar & Cleveland Mo Mowlam. The current Patron for Hoop Dreams is Vera Baird, MP for Redcar & Cleveland.
Hoop Dreams has developed to such an extent that the number of coaches has increased from 2 in 1997 to 21 active coaches at present. Over the last few years, there have been over 7000 young people benefiting from Hoop Dreams. These numbers are predicted to increase with future developments.
