TEES Valley Mohawks’ new signing, former British Basketball League point guard Paul Ihonor, will go straight into the squad for this weekend’s fixtures.

Mohawks tonight take on Wrexham outfit NEWI Nets in the Patrons Cup then head up the A1 tomorrow to play Team Northumbria in the National Cup second round.

Head coach Creon Raftopoulos said: “Ihonor played for the Mohawks two seasons ago and his experience of playing in the BBL with the Sheffield Sharks and in Division One with Sheffield Arrows will free up Pierre Sully and David Hanson.”

Mohawks will be hopeful of overcoming struggling NEWI Nets in their third Patrons Cup pool game.

The Teessiders are hoping the game in Wales will be the easier of their two weekend games. The Nets are still looking for their first win of the season after being dumped out of the National Cup by Fourth Division side Sefton Stars 44-58 at home in one of the only cup shocks so far this season.

That was followed by defeats at Black Country (90-76) and at home to Birmingham Aston Athletic (77-71).

Tomorrow night the Mohawks will be in action at Benfield Leisure Centre (6pm) looking for revenge against the unbeaten Team Northumbria, who squeezed a 92-90 victory against the Teessiders two weeks ago in the Patrons Cup.
